Vietnam random notes

If you’ve been reading this blog regularly you know the drill already – when leaving a country I always write a post summarising the random things we’ve noticed throughout our stay. So here we go:

Vietnam, the land of highly secure WiFi passwords. Most people don’t bother changing theirs from the default 12345678 so even if you’re sat outside a cafe or a hotel, free internet access is always at your disposal. You could tell some establishments were taking cyber security a bit more seriously when they changed their password to 87654321.

Vietnam seems fairly diverse when it comes to religion. From neon lit churches, through little shrines in people’s homes to honour their ancestors to giant slow burning incense spirals in Chinese temples, Vietnam has it all.

Locals love a good photo shoot and before going on holiday they always go shopping for new outfits. Quite some contrast to people like us who go travelling and wear the same clothes over and over again for half a year. Anyway, many attractions have realized the potential and come ready with qitch props such as this flowery tuk tuk:

Or this:

Or this one for example:

By the time you’ve got enough pictures to fill up three family photo albums you get quite hungry. One of the most common dishes in Vietnam is beef noodle soup called pho. Each region prepares a slightly different version and I love them all unconditionally.

Anton’s favourite was banh mi which is a filled baguette deliciousness, unlike any sandwich you’ve had. You need to be careful when showing your appreciation though because ‘yum’ (spelled as ‘dâm’) means ‘horny’ in Vietnamese.

You can wash it all down with bia hơi, a speciality brewed daily and matured for a short period. Once it sells out that’s usually it as they don’t get a fresh batch in until the next day. It’s way more popular in the north than in the south where people sometimes jokingly refer to it as ‘toilet beer’. I’ll let you figure out why for yourselves.
